Colombian and Venezuelan lawmakers meet in Bogotá

Legislators from Colombia and Venezuela will meet here today to review the state of relations between the two nations and assess the possibilities for deepening them.

In the joint session, members of the two delegations will address the progress and challenges of the process of resuming ties initiated by Colombian President Gustavo Petro and his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolás Maduro, and will also make proposals to revitalise them.

One of the points to be addressed will be the creation of a plan for the Colombian-Venezuelan border, with a view to development and exchange on both sides; and they will also discuss the need to promote initiatives that allow the linking of institutions and the civilian population of the two countries in all these actions.

The Colombian congressmen convening the joint session are Senator Gloria Flórez of the Historic Pact and the representative of the Chamber of Deputies, Alejandro Toro.

For Venezuela, the president of the Venezuela-Colombia Parliamentary Friendship Group, Julio Chávez, and deputies Juan Alvarado, Vanesa Montero, Carolina García, Asia Villegas, Timoteo Zambrano, Ilenia Medina, Luis Romero and Anyelith Tamayo will participate.

The re-establishment of diplomatic relations between the neighbouring countries occurred in August 2022 after six years of estrangement and after Gustavo Petro came to power in the Casa de Nariño.
