Cuellar and Erislandy repeated their triumphs, making it five wins for the islanders.
New victories by Jorge Cuellar and Erislandy Alvarez brought Cuba’s consecutive victories at the Bangkok 2024 Pre-Olympic Boxing Tournament to five.
Cuellar (71kg) again won by no-show, as he did on Saturday. This time it was the Congolese Steve Kulenguluka who did not go to the boxing ring and the boy from the Island added his third smile.
Alvarez (63.5kg), last year’s universal runner-up, made it his mission to get past Brazil’s Clesisson Dos Santos, who he disposed of 5-0 to celebrate for the second time in the Thai capital.
The vote (29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27) shows his dominance, even though a couple of judges saw him lose the second round.
This Wednesday, Central Caribbean bronze medallist Yaquelin Estornell will look to emulate her as the opponent of Canada’s Sara Kali, whose record includes 32 wins and 13 losses.
Cuba also entered world silver medallist Fernando Arzola (+92 kg), who will make his debut on the same day against Mexico’s Javier Cruz.
