Ciego de Avila science celebrates new university graduates

More than 700 families in Ciego de Avila today saw the effort of several years become a reality as they participated in the graduation of one or more of their members who completed higher education studies at the Máximo Gómez Báez University (Unica) in this province.

In the roofed hall Giraldo Córdova Cardín, in the capital city of Avila, 725 university students of the daytime courses, by encounter, distance education and all those taught in the centers and municipal branches, received their degrees in Pedagogical, Social and Humanistic, Economic and Business, Agricultural, Informatics and Exact Sciences, Physical Culture and Sports, and Technical Sciences.

With the presence of the Hero of the Republic René González Sehwerert, his wife Olga Salanueva, and the authorities of the Party and the Government in the territory, the Golden Titles, the Scientific Merit Award, as well as the awards in the categories of Student Assistant, Teaching, Sports, Culture and Defense activities were presented.

In an atypical closing of the university year, as a consequence of the curricular adjustment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Lázaro Arley Martín Márquez, Bachelor of Law, was also recognized as the most integral graduate, who invited all the graduates to return to Unica in search of research and innovations to implement them in every job.

Doctor of Science Yurisbel Gallardo Ballat, rector of the University of Avila, said that the new group of professionals is called to work with dedication and generate positive changes in their environment.

Rodolfo Daniel Rivero Estrada, director of University Extension, explained to the Cuban News Agency that the Ciego de Avila university stands out for its university-business link, since, regardless of the difficult economic situation the country is going through, the students have not stopped their teaching process nor have they stopped their internships with entities related to their specialties.

This is the 45th graduation and was dedicated to the four and a half decades since the founding of the University of Avila.

Unica has gained prominence in socio-cultural work, events and research, in addition to science and innovation awards, said Rivero Estrada.

We hope to receive the institutional evaluation of the National Accreditation Board in March to opt for the category of University of Excellence.

In recent years, more than 90 percent of the students’ undergraduate theses have been linked to territorial problems, with an important role for science, technology and innovation.

The topics have been related to food production, plant health, animal health, plant genetic resources and seeds, specialties included in the National Plan for Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education.

Since it was founded in September 1978, the Máximo Gómez Báez University has established some 200 international agreements with universities and scientific centers of several European and Latin American countries, with the aim of increasing the efficiency of teaching and improvement of its students for the benefit of economic and social development.
