China called for respect for election results in Venezuela

China today called for respect for the choice of the Venezuelan people in the recent elections that gave victory to Nicolás Maduro.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said the parties «should respect Venezuela’s right to choose its own path of development and believe that the government and people of that country have the ability to manage their internal affairs well». Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Nicolás Maduro on his election victory and reaffirmed Beijing’s support for the «just struggle against external interference».

In his message, the Asian leader praised Maduro’s leadership in the search for a path of development in accordance with the national conditions of his country, «achieving notable successes in national construction».

«China and Venezuela are friends of mutual trust and joint development partners,» he added, and emphasised the Chinese government’s support for Caracas’ efforts «to maintain its national sovereignty, national dignity and social stability, as well as its just struggle against external interference».

Xi Jinping stressed his high regard for bilateral relations and expressed his readiness to work together with President Maduro «to continue to lead the China-Venezuela comprehensive strategic partnership to new heights for the benefit of the peoples of both countries».

The Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice certified the victory of President Nicolás Maduro in the recent elections.

After a formal expert opinion, the president of the Supreme Court, Caryslia Rodríguez, confirmed that «in an unrestricted and unequivocal manner (…) the bulletins issued by the National Electoral Council are backed up by the tally sheets issued by each of the machines».

Maduro called for the expertise to be carried out in the face of questions from opposition sectors about the election results.

The magistrate confirmed that there was an attempted coup d’état in the country accompanied by a large-scale cyber-attack.
