Work is underway in Ciego de Avila to eliminate breeding sites of the mosquito that transmits the Oropouche virus

The collection of solid waste, the cleaning of green areas and the elimination of micro dumps are some of the actions carried out by the workers of Communal Services in Ciego de Avila to eliminate possible breeding places of the mosquito that transmits the Oropouche fever.

Luis Alberto Pérez Olivares, director of this entity, informed that they have the necessary fuel to carry out these sanitation actions.

In this regard, he pointed out that, given the depressed equipment, the transport is coordinated with other organisations, to achieve the cleaning and collection in all the popular councils, as well as the sweeping of streets and gutters.

«The aim is to eliminate all possible breeding sites to prevent the spread of the mosquito, given that we are in the rainy season, which, together with the increase in temperatures, facilitates its rapid spread,» said the director.

Pérez Olivares warned that community participation is necessary, as everything that is done through community services and anti-vector campaigns is not enough, because it also depends on sanitation in every home and workplace.

Oropouche fever, which produces symptoms similar to dengue fever, is transmitted by the Culicoides paraensis midge, present in the Americas region, but also by the Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito.
