The city of Miami, in Florida, will be the setting next Wednesday, 28 October, for a rally to demand an end to the United States’ economic, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba.
The mobilisation will take place from 18:30 to 20:00 hours at the Torch of Friendship, located at 301 Biscayne Boulevard, and is organised by the Miami Coalition to End the US Blockade of Cuba.
Under the slogan «Down with the blockade against the Cuban people!», the call aims to make visible the rejection of US sanctions and to vindicate the right of the Cuban population to live without economic measures that aggravate their daily difficulties. The dissemination materials for the activity maintain that Cuba does not represent a threat to any country and call for the lifting of the restrictions affecting the island.
The call focuses on the humanitarian consequences attributed to the tightening of sanctions, especially those related to fuel and energy supply. According to the poster’s denunciation, the fuel shortage contributes to blackouts and affects water supply and the operation of hospitals. It also points to difficulties in accessing medicines and other essential goods, in a context of serious economic problems for the Cuban population.
The mobilisation also aims to show that within the Cuban community residing in southern Florida there are voices that question the policy of sanctions against the island. Against those who defend maintaining or tightening the measures of economic pressure, its organisers assert that political differences should not translate into punishments that affect millions of people.
The initiative adds to the solidarity actions that call for a change in Washington’s policy towards Cuba and defend dialogue and respect for the country’s sovereignty. The Miami rally invites participation from those who support lifting the blockade, regardless of their opinions on the Cuban political reality.
