Timetable for eligibility to the Citizen Power of Venezuela presented

The Nominations Committee of the Citizen’s Power of the Venezuelan National Assembly (Parliament) will announce here today the timetable for the selection of candidates to fill the main positions in this state body.

This working team was proposed by the Board of Directors, created last Thursday in an ordinary session of the Parliament and a day later was installed in the Federal Legislative Palace with its 13 legislators, three of them as president and two vice-presidents.

Giussepe Alessandrello, a deputy of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), was elected as head of the board, and will be accompanied by José Gregorio Correa (Democratic Alliance) and Desirée Santos Amaral, of the same organisation.

The Nominations Committee will appoint the representatives of the Republican Moral Power, consisting of the Ombudsman, Attorney General and Comptroller General of the Republic, who must be approved by the plenary of the National Assembly.

In statements to the press, the president of the committee, Giuseppe Alessandrello, explained that the timetable presented was unanimously approved and that they will have a period of 30 days to bring the proposals to the plenary.

He said that the timetable will be presented to then «advance in the fulfilment of the tasks contemplated in the law» until the list of eligible candidates is presented.

The vice-president of the Nominations Committee, José Gregorio Correa, said that from Tuesday they will open the call for applications for those who wish to apply for the positions.

He stressed that any Venezuelan citizen who wants to opt for any of the positions available «should come and do so» because they will be open to all, according to the mandate received.

Correa, of the Democratic Alliance, clarified that the Committee is not there to evaluate party political situations and that candidates must only comply with the requirements set out in the Constitution and national laws.

The appointment and approval of the Nominations Committee is in accordance with Article 279 of the Constitution and Article 23 of the Organic Law of Citizen Power.
