Fréderich Cepeda and Reemberto Barreto were the best player and pitcher, respectively, of the seventh and eighth subseries of the II Elite League of Cuban Baseball.
This was decided by the unanimous vote of the press, the National Baseball Commission (CNB) and the fans, and was reported at the press conference of this sport held every Monday at the Latin American Stadium.
The meeting was attended by statistician Carlos del Pino, who has 32 national series, two Olympic Games, two World Classics and eight World Championships, among other titles.
Del Pino, who also holds several international positions in this field, offered his views on several topics, including the use of statistics and sabermetrics in Cuba today, which he said is growing.
At the meeting, it was confirmed that on December 25, the last day of the preliminary phase of the League, will be played from 1:30 p.m. in all stadiums, to facilitate the return of players to their homes for the active rest at the end of the year.
The meeting to select the two reinforcements for each team that qualifies for the semifinals of the competition, which will begin on January 4, is scheduled for January 27.
Juan Reinaldo Pérez Pardo, National Baseball Commissioner, commented that the League’s champion team could participate in an international series in February against similar teams from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, in the latter country. He also confirmed that if that series does not take place, the champion would attend another international series in the 2024 season.
Interest was aroused by the announced celebration of the tournament of champion clubs of Cuba next year, to which Pérez Pardo explained that it is planned from January 19 with the traditional format. Further details on the matter will be provided before the end of the year.
The meeting also allowed for a summary of the implementation of the new baseball development strategy on the island, in which progress is being made and there are still many objectives to be achieved.
As part of this explanation, Pérez Pardo informed that Professor Humberto Guevara will assume the direction of the national technical commission, a task that until now was performed by Ricardo Eizméndiz. The latter will be in charge of the sports intelligence work within the CNB.
