The leader of the Cuban Revolution, Raúl Castro, and President Miguel Díaz-Canel, today lead the workers’ rally in this capital to celebrate May 1st, World Proletariat Day.

Thousands of representatives of the working class from five municipalities of Havana have been gathering in the Anti-imperialist Tribune since early morning.

Cubans of all generations are also gathering all over the country in squares, parks and avenues to attend what are expected to be parades and rallies to extol the value of work and to support the revolutionary process in the Caribbean nation.

The day before, the secretary general of the Cuban Workers’ Central (CTC), Ulises Guilarte, stressed that this May 1st will express more strongly the spirit of unity of the Cuban people in the midst of difficult circumstances, due to the harassment of the US government and its policy of economic, financial and commercial siege against Cuba.

He also praised the participation in the events of the proletarian festival of more than a thousand foreign visitors who are members of the Cuba solidarity committees from almost 50 countries, present in the Cuban capital for an international meeting of solidarity with the island.

International Workers’ Day was established in 1889 to be celebrated every May 1st by agreement of the Socialist Workers’ Congress held in Paris.

Since then, in many countries the day has been a reason for festivities, but in others it has been an opportunity for demonstrations and struggles for the rights of the working class.
