Protected areas occupy an important part of the Great Northern Wetland

The most important protected areas in Ciego de Avila are part of the Great Northern Wetlands, including relevant ecosystems such as the Central and Western Ecological Reserve of Cayo Coco, and the Loma de Cunagüa and El Venero Fauna Refuges.

Organisms such as the Institute of Hydraulic Resources, the Company for the Protection of Flora and Fauna, and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, Citma, are involved in the conservation of the Ramsar Site, a category granted by UNESCO.

The Great Wetland of Ciego de Avila is the second largest and most important in the country, with an enviable flora and fauna, which is treasured by several municipalities located in the north of the province of Avila.

Monitoring actions and actions for the conservation of plant and animal species occupy specialists and workers, both from Citma and the Flora and Fauna Company of the territory.
