The Pilar Dunes, located at the western end of Cayo Guillermo, north of the Avileño municipality of Morón, constitute an outstanding natural element that forms part of the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago, and as a Protected Area has great repercussions in the province and the country.
It is the core zone of the Buenavista Biosphere Reserve and is part of the Ramsar Site of the same name, with prominent mounds of sand or stabilised dunes that do not migrate, some researchers say they are the oldest of the northern keys of Ciego de Avila.
It is the highest dune system in the country, up to 14.7 m high. On top of these large mounds of excellent quality sand, species such as the Coccothrinax litoralis palm, endemic to Cuba, grow.
Cayo Guillermo, where this area is located, has a high tourist demand precisely because of the quality of its beaches and the high degree of naturalness it preserves, values that visitors can appreciate or enjoy through different tourist modalities (Redacción Informativa R.M).
