The Ozone Technical Unit in Cuba recognised journalist Román Romero López, from the Ciego de Ávila Bureau of the Cuban News Agency, for the systematic generation of content and coverage of activities aimed at promoting care for the ozone layer.
Romero López, a reporter specialising in science, technology, and environmental issues, received the accolade at the provincial event for World Ozone Day, held today at the El Vaquerito Military Construction Company, located in the Avilanian municipality of Morón.
In exclusive comments for the press outlet where he works, the journalist thanked the recognition and stated that it is the result of professional relationships and the trust placed in him by the Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (DT-Citma).
At this Avilanian institution, he also works as a specialist for the Environment Sub-Delegation, which facilitates his journalistic treatment of these matters, based on his daily activity and learnings from national and international courses on environmental management and sustainable development, as well as integration into climate change adaptation projects.
At the national level, the Cuban News Agency also received the recognition of the Ozone Technical Unit, awarded at the national event for the 30th anniversary of the latter body, which belongs to Cubaenergía, an entity subordinate to the Agency for Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies, of CITMA.
This celebration coincided with World Ozone Day, which is commemorated on 16 September, a date established by the United Nations in 1994, in honour of the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987.
That important international agreement marked a milestone in global cooperation to control and eliminate ozone-depleting substances, considered a direct threat to life on the planet.
In Ciego de Ávila, the Ozone Technical Unit awarded similar recognition to Avilanian Television, the Tourism Services Company (Emprestur), the Ramón Domínguez de la Peña Primary School, in the coastal community of Júcaro, belonging to the municipality of Venezuela; the Pablo Elvio Cabrera Basic Secondary School, in the main town, and the DT-Citma.
