Sprinter Omara Durand will once again be in the spotlight for Cuba today on the eighth day of competition at the 17th edition of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, with her presence in the 100m flat (T12) semi-final.
Omara and her guide Junior Kindelán are strong favourites to advance to the final at midday and win their second title at the Parisian multi-sport event, after dominating the 400m, and will be hoping to win gold in the 200m in the coming days.
The Santiago-born athlete, world record holder and owner of nine world titles in the five rings, has already announced her retirement from active sport when she finishes in the City of Light, which will conclude on the 8th.
Norivis de las Heras, in the shot put (T64), and Ulises Aguilera, in the javelin throw (F13), will also compete in direct finals at the Stade de France on Thursday.
The other Cuban in action today will be Para-swimmer Lorenzo Pérez, who will open in the preliminaries of the 100m freestyle (S6), and has a good chance of advancing to the final, in search of a medal, at the Arena Paris La Défense.
So far, the largest of the Antilles has accumulated three gold medals with Omara (T12), in the 400 metres flat, Robiel Yankiel Sol, in the long jump, and Guillermo Varona (F46), in the javelin throw.
In addition to these gold medals, silver medals were won by sprinter Yamel Luis Vives (T44), in the 100 metres flat, and para-weights athlete Pablo Ramírez, in the 54 kilograms.
With these victories, Cuba (3-2-0) is in 26th place in the medal table, led by China with 135 (62-46-27), followed by Great Britain (74/33-25-16) and the United States (63/25-26-12).
