One of the most outstanding athletes of all time in this province, Mercedes Pomares Primelles from Majagua, passed away on Tuesday, and the Avilanian sports movement is in mourning.
The golden left-hander, who was born on 21 May in Majagua, started playing volleyball at the age of 14 and over the course of time was part of the legendary team that shattered the record of the Japanese girls’ wizards with 62 consecutive victories.
She also captained the Cuban team to many titles, including three Central American and Caribbean Games and four Pan American Games, as well as being named one of the 10 Best in Cuba in 1977 and 1978, and the best attacker in the 1977 World Cup and the 1978 World Championship.
The stellar spiker attended the Olympic Games in Munich 1972, Montreal 1976 and Moscow 1980. In 2010 she was manager of the Qatar women’s national team. We send her family and friends our deepest condolences on behalf of the Avila sports movement (INDER Press Department in Ciego de Avila).
