New research is being undertaken by the Bioplants Centre, attached to the Máximo Gómez Báez University in Ciego de Ávila, to improve agricultural production, both for food and ornamental purposes.
This involves the development of biotechnological products with high added value that have been introduced into the in vitro cultivation cycle for new explants.
And it is the Bioplants Centre’s department for Scaling and Technology Transfer that is in charge of research work on banana plants, which are important for the population’s diet, and on lavender, orchid and rosemary varieties, which are important for obtaining essential oils and flavourings.
Researchers in Ciego de Avila are working to contribute to the necessary food sovereignty by searching for higher yielding and genetically improved crops.
