Moscow calls on London to refrain from the use of violence

Russia calls on the UK to refrain from unjustified use of violence against protesters, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said today.

Commenting on the recent wave of protests in the UK, she wrote on her Telegram channel that unfounded accusations against Moscow of repressing dissent and censorship are often heard from London, as well as loud calls for democracy and respect for human rights.

However, in this case, it is up to the British authorities and police to act solely on the basis of the law, he said.

Zakharova recalled that citizens have every right to express their disagreement with the policy of the authorities.

The spokeswoman added that in this regard Moscow calls on London «to refrain from unjustified and disproportionate use of violence against demonstrators and to ensure that the right of the British people to freedom of assembly is respected».

He stressed that Russia does not interfere in the internal affairs of foreign states and refrains from giving instructions for the solution of internal problems and crises.

Sky News television reported that law enforcement officers in the UK arrested more than 90 people during protests following the deaths of three children in a knife attack in the town of Southport.

On 29 July, Southport police reported a serious incident in the morning in Southport that claimed the lives of three girls aged six and seven, while 10 other people, including eight children, were injured, after which officers arrested a 17-year-old man suspected in the attack.

The tragedy led to protests in Southport and other cities, including London, which turned into riots and clashes with police.

As a result, nearly 40 law enforcement officers were injured.
