Dissatisfaction grows over quality of awards
More than a hundred medals awarded during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have been found to be defective, with no technical solution so far, the investigative online newspaper La Lettre reported today.
According to the source, that would be the number of medals returned by athletes awarded at the five rings event, hosted by the City of Light between 26 July and 11 August last year.
The cracks and other problems in the medals are said to have caused difficulties at the top of the Monnaie de Paris organisation, to the point of causing the dismissal of its main production managers, he added.
According to La Lettre, the manufacturer’s chief executive, Marc Scwartz, «urgently sacrificed» his staff, an information that the organisation has not confirmed.
The cases of US skateboarder Nyjah Huston and French swimmer Maxime Grousset, who showed the problems with the medals on social media as early as August 2024, in the middle of the Olympic Games, stand out.
Le Figaro newspaper echoed the report and also mentioned the complaints of French swimmers Clément Secchi and Yohann Ndoye-Brouard, bronze medallists in the 4 x 100 breaststroke.
La Lettre reports that Monnaie de Paris declined to comment on the situation with the quality of the medals and warned the media about filing a complaint against them for defamation.
