Marco Rubio is not satisfied with the blow suffered by US diplomacy at the UN when the General Assembly discussed, on an emergency basis in July, the vile reinforcement of the US blockade against Cuba.
With the approach of the discussion in the General Assembly of the Resolution condemning that blockade, which has been approved some thirty times in that United Nations body, the Secretary of State is on the move, calling on Latin American leaders to ask them not to support Cuba in its just demand.
According to press reports, Rubio called on 13 October to the President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, to ask him to vote against the Cuban Resolution when it is presented at the General Assembly.
For the Secretary of State, «the Cuban regime will not carry out the reforms the Cuban people deserve while it believes the international community is on its side.»
On 12 October, Rubio also held a telephone conversation with Colombian President Abelardo De la Espriella, although neither party mentioned that the subject of Cuba was raised. The current Colombian government has aligned itself with Washington’s aggressive policies in the region.
The United States is seeking its allies to vote against the text, which in 2025 was approved by 165 votes in favour, 7 against and 12 abstentions. El Salvador was absent from that vote.
To this end, the State Department has issued instructions to its ambassadors around the world to apply pressure in that direction on the governments of the countries where they are accredited.
