March in Colombia in support of Petro

A popular mobilisation will take place today in the capital in support of the president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and against the manoeuvres of the National Electoral Council (CNE) to remove him from power.

The political coalition Pacto Histórico called on citizens to take to the streets on this day and called on social networks for the entire population of the countryside and cities to join the mobilisation, which they called Marcha Contra El Golpe (March Against the Coup).

In Bogotá, the call is to gather in the central Plaza Bolívar from 10:30 (local time), where there will be demonstrations of support for the nation’s first left-wing government.

Several social and trade union movements are expected to join the rally, which rejected the CNE’s indictment of the president for allegedly violating the funding ceilings for his 2022 election campaign.

Among these associations is the National Unitary National Command made up of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores de Colombia, the Confederación General del Trabajo, as well as the Confederación de Pensionados de Colombia and the Confederación Democrática de Pensionados.

Fecode, the Colombian Federation of Educators, also declared a state of alert in repudiation of the CNE’s decision and reiterated its support for a social mobilisation, pointing out that there is a coup d’état underway.

Other organisations that showed their solidarity with the president are the Minga del Suroccidente, which declared itself in Permanent Assembly, and the Afro-Colombian National Peace Council.
