The current conditions do not matter for the people of Tamarindo, a town belonging to the Avilanian municipality of Florencia, to enjoy the traditional festivities that have been held since 1930 at the end of January each year.
This time, Tamarindo bids farewell to the first month of the year with the town decked out. Its main street is covered with marquees, a platform for the presentation of musical groups, and other allegories typical of these festivities.
The emotions are multiplied this weekend with the awaited confrontation between La Mariposa and La Paloma. Voluminous floats are almost ready for the showdown to materialise on Sunday 2 February, preceded by lively congas and a fireworks display.
Alberto Álvarez, who for many years has been recognised in Tamarindo as the presenter of both sides, explains that the names Mariposa and Paloma are by nature derived from ecological problems, given the proximity of the village to the hillsides of the central mountain range.
«This is a town that is passionate about its flocks, which they support unconditionally, although there is no jury that ultimately defines who the winner is,» says Alberto.
Tamarindo shows joy in its streets, abundant offers, discipline and expectations for this celebration. Peasant farmers come down from the hills to enjoy the traditions.
