Ecuador is still in the midst of a process of electoral definitions today, as political organisations decide who will be their candidates for the Executive and Parliament for the February 2025 elections.

After the movements Revolución Ciudadana (RC), Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN), Democracia Sí, and the Partido Socialista Ecuatoriano (PSE) announced their proposals for the upcoming elections, other political groups will announce their representatives this week.

The Pachakutik movement will hold its primaries on Wednesday and the president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), Leónidas Iza, is expected to be ratified as a candidate.

Other parties have until 17 August to carry out these internal democratic processes if they wish to nominate someone for the ballot.

So far, current president Daniel Noboa, for ADN; Luisa González, for RC; Pedro Granja, for PSE; and Iván Saquicela, sponsored by Democracia Sí, are the confirmed pre-candidates.

According to the calendar established by the National Electoral Council, the official registration of candidates will take place from September 13 to October 2.

Afterwards, there will be a period for objections, challenges and appeals before the Electoral Disputes Tribunal, and the official list of candidates will be published on 30 December.

Although all parties are immersed in this stage of defining names, there could still be changes, as five organisations from the progressive camp are holding talks in search of an alliance that will allow them to defeat the right.

More than 13 million Ecuadorians will be called to the polls on 9 February 2025, when they will elect president, vice-president, 151 legislators, and five Andean parliamentarians.

Those elected will hold office for the period 2025-2029 and will replace those who took office exceptionally in 2023, after then-president Guillermo Lasso decreed the death cross.
