The Dominican president, Luis Abinader, met with the former presidential candidate of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Abel Martinez, four days after the general elections, reported today the site of the Presidency.
The meeting, which lasted for an hour and 35 minutes, was held last night, with the aim of promoting the unity and collaboration necessary for the development of the country, beyond political differences.
The President’s press office said in a statement that the head of state, Martinez and his wife Nahiony Reyes shared in a pleasant atmosphere and discussed various issues of national interest.
The meeting was held privately on the 16th floor of a tower in the National District and ended at 20:50 local time.
Last Sunday, when speaking to the country after learning of the victory that guaranteed his re-election for another four years, Abinader stressed the importance of inclusion and collaboration between all sectors of the country.
At that time, he also said: «the time that begins today needs all of us united, those who have won and also those who have not; each one from their own place and with their own way of seeing things to serve the people».
Last night, it was also announced that he would meet with the presidential candidate of the People’s Force, Leonel Fernandez, but the meeting was postponed until 2 June due to the health of the former president.
