Cuban 50 kilogram (kg) freestyle gladiator Yusneylis Guzman will today go for the gold medal in her division in wrestling at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
According to the Cuban delegation, the organising committee notified that Guzman will take the place of India’s Vinesh Vinesh, who exceeded the morning weigh-in and was eliminated from the competition, according to the sports publication JIT.
Her opponent for the title will be Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States, who won bronze at Tokyo 2020.
The Cuban wrestler had achieved a historic performance on Tuesday by reaching the semi-finals, and although she lost 5-0 to Vinesh herself, she would challenge for the bronze medal.
With what happened now she secured the silver medal, something unprecedented for the island’s women in the five rings in this combat sport.
Champion of the Pan American Games of Santiago de Chile 2023, Chiqui won in the quarter-finals by technical superiority 10-0 against the Lithuanian Gabija Dilyte, and in her debut she beat the Turkish Evin Demirhan 7-6, in a difficult fight in the round of 16.
After 12 noon in Cuba, she will fight again for an unprecedented gold medal in women’s wrestling for the Caribbean nation.
This Tuesday, the Cuban delegation enjoyed the first title in Paris 2024 through the legend Mijaín López (130 kg), winner of his fifth crown in those stages.
