An official note from the Cuban Book Institute reports that on the night of Saturday 1st November, the distinguished Cuban writer, professor and journalist Julio Travieso Serrano, an essential figure of contemporary national narrative, died in Havana at the age of 85.
The text highlights that Travieso was born on 11th April 1940, studied Law at the University of Havana and completed his academic training with a Master of Science at the Lomonosov University, in Moscow.
In 1985 he obtained the title of Doctor in Economics at the Institute of Latin America of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union, the note emphasises.

For his revolutionary merits, he received the Medal of Combatant of the Clandestine Struggle in 1985, as well as the Distinction for National Culture and the Alexander Pushkin Order, awarded by the Russian state.
According to the Cuban Book Institute, by family decision, his body will be cremated and watched over in an intimate ceremony. On behalf of the Ministry of Culture and the UNEAC, the most heartfelt condolences were conveyed to his family, friends and readers.
