Cuban Dermatology mourns the loss of Professor Alfredo Abreu Daniel

Cuban dermatology is in mourning following the death of Professor Alfredo Abreu Daniel, who died on 23 November at the age of 94. Recognised as a true teacher of teachers, Abreu Daniel left an indelible mark on dermatological medicine both in Cuba and internationally.

Professor Abreu Daniel was an outstanding academic, full professor and consultant in dermatology, as well as a second degree specialist. His leadership in the Cuban Society of Dermatology, where he served as president for many years, and his role as national group leader for more than 40 years, consolidated him as a fundamental pillar of the speciality in the country.

In addition, he was the founder and first editor of the journal Folia Dermatológica Cubana, an important resource for the dissemination of dermatological knowledge in the Caribbean nation. His vast experience also led him to serve as an advisor to the World Health Organisation from 1977 to 1990, and as a member of the WHO expert panel on leprosy from 1980 to 2000.

His commitment to education and training of new specialists was unwavering. He worked tirelessly at the Hospital Universitario Clínico Quirúrgico Comandante Manuel Fajardo, dedicating himself to training both Cuban and foreign doctors, perpetuating his legacy through new generations of professionals.

In recognition of his extraordinary career, the Minister of Public Health awarded him the Lifetime Achievement Merit Award in 2019, a testament to his dedication and contribution to public health and dermatology.

Professor Alfredo Abreu Daniel’s legacy will live on in his students, colleagues and the medical community.
