Cuba presents innovative medical equipment and devices

Specialists from Cuba’s biopharmaceutical industry today presented President Miguel Díaz-Canel with innovative medical equipment and devices that contribute to raising the level of medical care for the population.

A panel of experts from the Biocubafarma Business Group explained to the president and other Cuban authorities the medical tools that have been developed despite the country’s complex economic situation, Cuban television news reported.

A device for the treatment of epilepsy in patients who do not respond to medical treatment, a device to detect hearing and visual difficulties, as well as a system for surgical planning of brain pathologies, are among the scientific advances.

According to the director of Cuba’s Neuroscience Centre (Cneuro), Mitchell Valdés, the equipment for assisting epileptics, called Estep, demonstrates its therapeutic efficacy through electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve.

For its part, said the specialist, the medical device that detects hearing and visual deficiencies in newborn children at the same time, stands out, precisely because of this peculiarity among its peers in the world.

More than twenty of these medical diagnostic instruments are already being used successfully on the island, and the country’s health system is beginning to export them to other countries, Valdés said.

On the other hand, he added, the Antillean island has a technological system for the integration and visualisation of tumour images during the planning of surgical procedures.

Likewise, the Cneuro has begun work to attend to the deficit and other patient functions through virtual reality video games, according to the television report.

On the other hand, the digital medical technology company Combiomed showed the Convioven lung ventilator for adult intensive care, designed during the Covid-19 pandemic, which provides services to patients who require it on the island.

This high-level scientific institution also created a toolkit for doctors working in primary health care areas, which facilitates research in the communities with better diagnoses and monitoring of patients.

The experts who spoke with the Cuban head of state praised the national health focus on mass screening, diagnosis and treatment with high-level therapeutic equipment that, at the same time, generates income for the national economy, the source said.
