Camagüey «overwhelmed» in National Boxing Series

The Agramontinos won eight out of 10 bouts against the Spirituans.

The host and defending champion, Camagüey, began the defence of its title on Monday with a comprehensive 54-22 victory over Sancti Spíritus, on the first day of the final of the National Boxing Series at the Rafael Fortún multi-purpose hall in Camagüey.

Los Guerreros del Mayor won eight of the 10 scheduled fights, including two divisions in which their rivals lacked representatives.

Among the local team’s successes, in the best fight of the 28 contested on the opening day, the experienced Santiago de Cuba reinforcement Yunier Fábregas (51 kg) defeated Jorge Griñán 3-0.

It was a battle from bell to bell, in which nobody asked for a truce, but Fábregas was more accurate and with his good defence stopped many of the punches thrown by his rival, especially at medium distance.

Another good duel arose from the exchange between the national runner-up Darieski Palmero (60 kg) and Ernesto Comas, won 2-1 by the former.

There were crosses of punches at all three distances and thrown from various angles. But the arm was raised to the most accurate in the defensive work.

The fight that lifted the stands closed with a spectacular right hand from Maruán Roque (CMG) to the chin of Gabriel Cabado (SSP) in the second round, as a culmination of other blows that had put him in bad shape in the first round.

Camagüey’s Karel Simón (80 kg) and national runner-up Nelson Williams (92) won by no show.

After finishing the three bouts of this date, Camagüey leads with 54 points, followed by Matanzas (45). In third place there is a tie between Cienfuegos and Guantanamo (40).

On Tuesday, the matches Holguín-Cienfuegos, Sancti Spíritus-Guantánamo and Pinar del Río-Camagüey will take place. Matanzas will rest.
