A display of jubilation, joy and commitment marked Tuesday’s provincial plenary of the Cuban Workers’ Federation (CTC) in the municipality of Ciego de Ávila.

Held in the emblematic José Martí Park, the workers’ gathering served for Avilian workers to reaffirm their support for May Day and pay tribute to the centenary of the Historic Leader of the Cuban Revolution, as one of the meeting’s motivations.

Under the slogan «The Homeland Defends Itself», a representation of the 15 trade unions came together in a true act of revolutionary fervour.

Workers raised their voices to demand an end to the unjust and brutal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, chanting slogans such as «Down with the blockade!», which flooded every space of the central Avilian park.

The day before the May Day parade also served to reaffirm the combative and mass character of the Cuban working class.

In this regard, those present, dressed in the colours of our national flag, stated that this May Day they will march for peace and against the war against Cuba, reflecting the majority support of Avilanians for the slogan «For the Homeland».

In recognition of the preparation and dedication of the labour sector, the municipality of Ciego de Ávila officially received the «Ready for the Parade» status, a category that distinguishes organisation and commitment to popular mobilisations.

During the plenary, Niurka Ferrer Castillo, general secretary of the Cuban Workers’ Federation in the province, announced the position of each trade union.

She highlighted the unity and willingness of all work collectives to support the historic demands of the Cuban people and pay tribute to the legacy of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro, in the year of his centenary.
