The Yucatoons team, made up of students from the Faculty of Computer Science and Exact Sciences (FICE), is representing the Máximo Gómez Báez University of Ciego de Ávila (UNICA) in the Caribbean programming competition.
The team is participating in the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) and is formed by Avilanian students of the Computer Engineering degree:
· Roberto Rodríguez Rodríguez, first year
· Sergio de Jesús Marrero Rodríguez, second year
· Alexander Lázaro Rodríguez González, second year
The coach is Professor Fabián González Herrera, and the director is Yadelvys García Figueredo, dean of the FICE in Ciego de Ávila.
During the competition, the students demonstrate their preparation in programming, algorithms and mathematics through the MatCom Online Grader platform, which supports the development of the contest.
For five hours, the contestants, organised into teams of three members, compete for a place in the 2026 Caribbean Final, to be held on 7 November.
On Saturday 3 October, 62 teams from 12 institutions of the Ministry of Higher Education of the Republic of Cuba are taking part in the National Qualifiers for the Caribbean Final of the International Collegiate Programming Contest, the oldest, largest and most prestigious university programming contest in the world.
The contest also includes, as guests, 30 pre-university education teams, who compete for medals and places in university degrees related to computing.
Joining this festival of code are 17 guest teams, made up of students from other educational levels and former contestants.
