Argentine MPs Reject US Economic Blockade Against Cuba

National deputies for the Argentine province of La Rioja, Hilda Aguirre, Gabriela Pedrali and Sergio Casas, have rejected the economic, commercial and financial blockade that the United States has maintained against Cuba for more than six decades, Prensa Latina reported.

According to the news agency, the Riojan legislators considered it inadmissible that in the 21st century «an attempt is being made to subdue a people through hunger, isolation or military threat.»

Cuba has demonstrated throughout its history a profound vocation for peace, solidarity and cooperation among peoples, even in extremely adverse conditions, the politicians asserted.

They also denounced that such economic hostility subjects «the brotherly people of Cuba to conditions of extreme suffocation, violating basic human rights and affecting their sovereign development.»

«This blockade, maintained by the United States, constitutes a systematic policy of harassment that has been repeatedly condemned by the international community,» Aguirre, Pedrali and Casas stressed.

In that context, they warned, the recent statements by the United States Government are particularly serious, as they not only deepen the logic of the blockade but also advance the threat of possible military actions against the Island.

«These expressions are part of a strategy of pressure and destabilisation that jeopardises regional peace and violates the fundamental principles of international law,» they state.

«As representatives of the Argentine people, we reaffirm our commitment to the defence of sovereignty, the self-determination of peoples and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. The history of our region teaches us that intervention, interference and violence have never been the way,» the parliamentarians asserted.

And they stressed: «Cuba is not alone. Latin America is a region of peace and does not accept setbacks in terms of sovereignty and dignity of its peoples.»
