Americas Series: Left-handed duel in opening game

The representative teams of Cuba and Nicaragua, with left-handed starting pitchers, will face each other today on the opening day of the first edition of the Americas Baseball Series.

The helmsman of the Antillean team Leñadores de Las Tunas, Abeicy Pantoja, announced veteran Yoannis Yera to take the mound at the Estadio Nacional Soberania and the manager of the local team, Sandor Guido, appointed American Cole Cook.

Yera, reinforcement of the Cocodrilos de Matanzas, champion of the II Elite League of Cuban Baseball, is a 35-year-old pitcher with experience in 15 National Series, where he has a record of 115 wins with only 56 defeats and an effectiveness of 3.22 clean runs allowed per nine innings of work.

Ranked as one of the best pitchers on the island today, he has been a member of multiple Cuban teams in international tournaments such as the World Classics and the Caribbean Series, where he won the title with the Vegueros de Pinar del Río in 2015.

In the Caribbean winter leagues he has also left his mark, especially in Mexico where he signed a game without allowing a hit or run in 2022 with the Olmecas de Tabasco.

For his part, Cook, 27, comes to this event with hot blood, after being voted Most Valuable Player of the final of the Nicaraguan Professional League, defending the colours of the champions Leones de León.

In the playoffs, he had a win without a setback, only conceded one run in 12 innings and left a dozen opponents with the carbine on their shoulders.

The hosts’ trump card has excelled in independent leagues such as the Pioneer League, American Association and Frontier League, and as a student in 2019, he recorded the second-best ERA in the history of his Bradley University team.

Before this match, scheduled for 19:00 local time, the teams Águilas Metropolitanas (Panama) and Club Daom (Argentina) will face each other at the same venue at 14:00.

The Goats (Curaçao) and Caimanes de Barranquilla (Colombia) will not be able to play this Friday due to flight delays, as announced by the Baseball Association of the Americas, which forced them to schedule it for Monday 27th, where they will have to play a double bill.
