After just five of eighteen scheduled regular-season fixtures, Group B of Cuba’s U-23 National Baseball Championship has ignited as anticipated.
On Wednesday, Cienfuegos and Mayabeque split their double-header. The southerners took the opener 8–2 behind home runs from Manuel Fernández and outfielder Dany Oramas, but fell 4–10 in the nightcap.
Matanzas secured a second consecutive win over Villa Clara with a tight 2–1 victory. Starter Yan Carlos Lorenzo earned the win behind combined pitching efforts, while reliever Asiel Suárez notched the save.
These results forged a three-way tie at the summit between Matanzas, Cienfuegos, and Villa Clara (all 3–2).
In Group A, Pinar del Río claimed their fourth win in five outings – an 8–0 shutout against La Habana – becoming the tournament’s winningest team thus far. The westerners logged 11 hits, led by Jesús Arcia and Erick Echeverría with three apiece. Frank Denis Blanco recorded his second consecutive shutout. Brayan Leyva took the loss for Havana, whose pitching staff (five hurlers at Capitán San Luis Stadium) received poor defensive support committing three errors.
Isla de la Juventud remains winless after their fifth consecutive postponement against Artemisa.
In Group C, Camagüey routed Ciego de Ávila 10–2 behind starter Juan Raúl Lugo’s solid outing, while Las Tunas blanked Sancti Spíritus 8–0 with Leandro Cañada excelling. Camagüey and Las Tunas now share the group lead (3–2).
Finally in Group D, Holguín delivered their second straight shutout against Guantánamo (9–0), maintaining joint leadership with Santiago de Cuba (3–2). The Santiago squad celebrated their second campaign homer – smashed by cleanup hitter and catcher Harold Vázquez – during an 11–7 victory over Granma.
