Chinese President Xi Jinping received here today the US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, who is wrapping up a three-day visit to the Asian giant.
The president said that in the chaotic international situation all nations should unite and cooperate, instead of dividing and confronting.
«The people want to be open and progressive, not closed and regressive. As two important countries, China and the United States should be accountable to history, to the people and to the world, and become a source of stability for world peace and a promoter of common development,» he told his interlocutor.
According to Xinhua news agency, Xi said bilateral relations underwent major changes, but Beijing’s commitment to the stable, healthy and sustainable development of ties remained unchanged.
In this regard, he called for managing ties in accordance with mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation.
«The position of firmly safeguarding China’s sovereignty, security and development interests has not changed, and efforts to continue the traditional friendship between the Chinese and American people have not changed,» he added.
He expressed his hope that the two nations would work together in a positive and rational manner.
He called for seeing each other’s development as an opportunity rather than a challenge and finding the right way for the two major economies to get along.
Sullivan arrived in China on the 27th for a high-level dialogue with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, whom he met twice during his stay here.
The main issues on the table were Taiwan and the One China principle, China’s rights in the South Sea, cooperation in non-confrontational areas such as climate change and artificial intelligence, as well as Beijing’s stance against the politicisation of trade. Both sides focused on direct and in-depth communication on bilateral, regional and global issues, according to local press.
Many experts agreed that the purpose of Sullivan’s visit is not to achieve new breakthroughs, but to continue the steady momentum of bilateral relations over the past year amid renewed tensions.
In November this year, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation 2024 and G20 leaders’ summits will be held in Peru and Brazil, respectively.
Analysts do not rule out a possible bilateral meeting between the presidents of the two countries during the multilateral activities of these events.
