Women empowered in the mountainous region of the municipality of Florencia in Ciego de Ávila

In the International Year of Sustainable Development in Mountains and the world day of these ecosystems, the advancement of women in the municipality of Florencia was recognized as a relevant result of the international project Connecting Landscapes, recently completed in the Bamburanao massif.

After eight years of work, Conectando Paisajes has fulfilled its purpose of guaranteeing the effective protection of biodiversity against current and future threats in mountain landscapes, from the summit to the coast.

Yamilé Oria Hernández, producer of the Las Margaritas pig farm, located in Bamburanao, Florencia, said that raising pigs is part of a closed production cycle that makes her property a reference for other similar farms in the country.

She also explained that the crops support the animals, as their waste is used to generate biogas, and the waste from the biodigester is used as organic fertilizer for various crops.

Her involvement with Conectando Paisajes committed her and her family to the transfer of knowledge on the use of renewable energy sources and agroecological practices, which are essential for sustainable development in the lomerío.

For all these reasons, she considers herself an empowered woman of her time, capable of fulfilling any task without losing her feminine essence, therefore, if she has to yoke oxen, she does it, she said, leaving no room for doubts.

Proclaimed by the United Nations since 2022, International Mountain Day was celebrated for the first time this December 11, with the slogan «Women Move Mountains», in order to promote gender equality and, therefore, contribute to improving social justice, livelihoods and resilience in these ecosystems.
