The Ministry of the Interior has resolved to extend the validity of all Driving and Circulation Licences whose original expiry was scheduled between 1 January 2026 and 31 December 2027 until the year 2028.

The measure, effective immediately, establishes that documents falling within that period will not lose their validity; their holders must arrange for the corresponding renewal during the year 2028.

Major Alexander Sánchez González, head of the Traffic Directorate of the province, explained that the decision seeks to organise and decompress the renewal system, providing greater predictability for drivers and avoiding mass expirations in the short term.

Clarification on Medical Checks

The Ministry expressly clarified that this extension does not exempt holders over 65 and 70 years of age from complying with the updating of medical check-ups when current regulations so require. In those cases, psychophysical aptitude checks remain mandatory within the established timeframes.

The provision, issued by the Ministry of the Interior, applies to both private driving licences and vehicle circulation licences. Its application is automatic, so users do not need to carry out additional procedures during the extension period.
