US Democratic National Convention: Winds in Harris’s favour

Former US President Barack Obama expressed hope with the candidacy of Kamala Harris, whom he publicly reiterated his support and said she is ready to reach the White House today.

«I don’t know about you, but I’m excited,» Obama said to loud cheers at the United Center in Chicago, where the Democratic National Convention is being held until tomorrow.

Before an energised audience, the 44th president, the first black to occupy the Oval Office, assured that this is the moment: «We are ready for a President Kamala Harris».

Obama was preceded by his wife Michelle, who was also warmly applauded during his speech. She warned that the Republican «Donald Trump will try to attack Kamala Harris in this election», something they personally experienced, she stressed.

«For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us. His limited and narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated and successful people who happen to be black,» she stressed.

Later, after criticising Trump’s policies such as restricting reproductive freedom, Michelle Obama added: «America, hope is returning.

On this second day of the Democratic political party, party delegates held a symbolic ceremony for the formal nomination of Harris, who was confirmed on 6 August at the end of a virtual election.

The vice president accepted her official nomination as the party’s nominee for the upcoming election Tuesday in a video from a rally with her running mate, Tim Walz, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

«The delegates to the Democratic National Convention have nominated Tim Walz and me to be the next Vice President and President of the United States of America. I thank everyone for believing in what we can do together. We are honoured to be your nominees,» he said.

In addition, Senator Bernie Sanders, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, as well as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker and the grandchildren of former Presidents James Carter and John F. Kennedy took the stage.

Meanwhile, Stephanie Grisham, former White House press secretary during the Trump administration, confessed that she was not only a supporter of the former president, but believed in him, but now supports Harris.

«Trump mocks his supporters, calling them people who live in their parents’ basements,» she said.

The second night’s extensive programme had the theme «A Bold Vision for America’s Future».

Harris became the first woman of African-American and Indian descent to receive the nomination of one of the two parties vying for the White House every four years.
