Tigers Comeback at the Cepero

The Ciego de Ávila Tigers pulled a game out of the freezer and, coming from behind as the great ones often do, prevailed 10-8 against Camagüey this Thursday at the José Ramón Cepero stadium, as part of the National Baseball Series.

A cluster of five runs between the seventh and eighth innings turned the scoreboard around. Ciego de Ávila took the lead 10-8 after trailing 8-5.

Once again, defence played a nasty trick on the Avilanians, who committed four errors in the game. They now total nine in this subseries against the agramontinos and 19 in the entire championship, an aspect the young team will need to strengthen.

For its part, the Camagüey team scored all its runs with two outs; four of its eight runs were considered unearned.

Scores:

CAM: 8 – 12 – 2

CAV: 10 – 15 – 4

The win went to Yankiel Tamayo and the loss to Abel Bejarano. Home runs by Michael Thomson and Jorge Luis Contreras stood out.

Offensively, Yordanis Samón (5-5) excelled for Camagüey, and for the Tigers, Jorge Luis Contreras (5-3 with three RBIs) and Dayan Ibáñez (5-3).

The Bulls demonstrated cracks in their relief pitching, as no pitcher managed to preserve a three-run lead in the late innings, an element that could affect their qualification aspirations.

Rookie Randy Álvarez again worked effectively as a reliever, entering in the fourth inning to replace left-handed starter Javier Griñán. Right-hander Yankiel Tamayo closed the game solidly, establishing himself as a good option for finishing games.

With the series 2-1 in their favour, the Tigers will seek a win this weekend to dominate the head-to-head, before facing the always tricky Las Tunas at the Julio Antonio Mella stadium next week.
