Blinken rules out change in US policy towards Cuba

Despite calls that are multiplying today in the United States, the head of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, ruled out any change in policy towards Cuba before 20 January 2025.

Blinken assured on Wednesday that he «does not anticipate» any change in US policy towards Cuba before President Joe Biden concludes his term of office next month.

«I don’t anticipate any change in our Cuba policy by this administration,» said the senior official during an appearance before a congressional committee.

He also repeated the same when asked if the Biden administration would be analysing the eventual removal of Cuba from the list of countries sponsoring terrorism.

«As I said, I don’t anticipate any change,» Blinken stressed.

Cuba was first designated on the list of sponsors of terrorism in 1982 during Ronald Reagan’s term in office, and remained so until 2015, when the Caribbean country was removed from the list by then President Barack Obama, who attempted in the last stage of his administration to bring Cuba closer to the island.

However, in January 2021, a few days after leaving the White House, Trump returned Cuba to the list, a designation that Biden maintains.
