The Avilanian Randol Izquierdo, Cuba’s Best in Third Stage of the Vuelta

The Avilanian Randol Izquierdo produced Cuba’s best performance today in the Vuelta a Chiriquí 2025 by taking sixth place during the third stage of 82 kilometres on a circuit in the locality of David.

Izquierdo clocked one hour, 45 minutes and 41 seconds, the same as the hero of the day, the Costa Rican Jason Huertas (Manzate-La Selva-Scott), over a distance covered at an average of 46.55 km/h.

The rest of the leading peloton of 49 cyclists recorded a similar time, which included the junior Brian Guardado (16th place), his fellow Yumurín provincial rider Vicente Sanabria (38th) and the Sancti Spíritus rider Ricardo Delgado (39th).

The Matanzas riders Yariel de León (42nd) and Joselín Piedra (45th), and the Havana rider Yunier Álvarez (49th) also arrived in that group, as did the Costa Rican Pablo Mudarra (Colono Bikestation Kolbi), who continues as the absolute leader of the traditional Panamanian race.

After another good performance by the Cubans, Sanabria, Delgado and Izquierdo improved their respective positions within the top 20 of the race, placing in this order in 12th, 13th and 16th place in the individual general classification of the 122 cyclists still in competition.

Randol’s performance, with the added victory in the second of three scheduled flying finishes today, likewise benefited him by climbing to third place in the under-23 category and in the points prize, by rising to ninth (with 10 points), among the 22 riders who have managed to be included in that privileged department.

In the individual general classification, the Antilleans De León also found higher positions in 31st place and Piedra in 55th, who, despite the discomfort of a leg wound with seven stitches, following a dramatic fall in the peloton, has continued in the competition.

For his part, Guardado improved by nine places this Sunday and settled into 61st and as the sixth most outstanding junior; Álvarez rose to 62nd, but dropped to third in the masters group, while Amed Marcos is in 72nd overall and 24th among those under 23 years of age.

The Cuban squad, directed by one of the legends of Cuban cycling, Eduardo Alonso, defended the sixth place to which it ascended this Saturday among 19 contestants, led in this order by the clubs Colono Bikestation Kolbi (Costa Rica), Senafront-Rali (Panamá), Tag Cycling Team (Canada), and Manzate-La Selva-Scott and Costafrut-Acmarriot-Giant, both from Costa Rica.

This Monday, the fourth stage will be run from nine in the morning on a route of 144.6 km through the areas of David-Paso Canoas-Finca Blanco-Paso Canoas and Solano, with three scoring intermediate sprints.

REMAINING STAGES: Day 25- David-Entrada San Andrés-Solano-Volcán 101 km; day 26- David-Entrada San Andrés-San Pablo-La Chancleta 127.2 km; day 27- Individual Time Trial Punta Tierra 19.30 km and day 28- Closed Circuit in David Este 88.0 km.
