The Ciego de Avila girls’ basketball team finished second in group B in the elimination phase, to earn a place among the semi-finalists in basketball at the 60th National School Games, which will be played until next Friday in the Giraldo Córdova Cardín indoor basketball hall in Avila.
The team from the Tierra de la Piña secured their ticket with a 51-36 win over the girls from Pinar del Río, supported by an excellent defence, which allowed them to counteract the greater stature of their opponents.
The scores were 18-13, 9-12, 13-2 and 11-4, a result that already guarantees them an improvement on the sixth place achieved in the previous edition.
In the qualifying round, in addition to the Pinar del Río team, they beat Las Tunas (49×47) and lost to Santiago (17×49).
For their part, the men’s team has not had the same luck and suffered their second defeat in three games, after losing to the Santiago team by a score of 100×31.
On the first day, the Avileños debuted successfully against Villa Clara (68×60) and in their second game they were beaten by Mayabeque 58×54.
This Thursday, the girls will face the powerful Havana team in the semifinals, while the boys will face the Tunisian team, looking to advance to the dispute for fifth place.
