Santiago de Cuba’s Red Devils and Ciego de Ávila’s Sharks drew 1-1 in the first leg of the playoff for the Clausura Tournament of Cuba’s 108th National First Division Football League, played at Santiago’s Antonio Maceo Stadium.
The hosts started strongly seeking an early advantage. After several chances, Franklin Jacas scored in first-half stoppage time (45+1 minute).
After halftime, the visitors equalised through Osman Denis Marrero at 47 minutes following a four-pass move covering three-quarters of the pitch.
Santiago coach Leonardo Herrera told the Cuban News Agency: «We had opportunities to score. Despite our training, the finishing wasn’t as it should be. But I’m satisfied with the boys’ performance.» Goalkeeper Jonathan Fernández stated: «We must turn the page and focus mentally on the second leg – 90 minutes to regain our Clausura place. We’ll improve our final touch effectiveness in training and convert chances. It’s complicated away, but we’ll give everything as Santiagueros.»
Ciego de Ávila coach Rolando Ayllón noted: «They started strong – a great team. We aimed to level play and endure: unfamiliar pitch conditions plus heat made it challenging. We delivered a good performance and earned a meritorious draw for the return.» He concluded: «Now we play at home in good form with fan support, but nothing’s decided. Santiago excels in these matches – we’ll fight for every ball.»
The second leg will be played this Wednesday at Morón’s Sergio Alonso Grandal Stadium. Santiago seeks their fourth consecutive Clausura appearance, while Ciego aims to return after two absent tournaments.
