Seed development in the national strategy for food sovereignty and nutritional education is progressing in the central province of Sancti Spíritus.
According to Prensa Latina, the creation of the state-owned micro-enterprise Biotecnología Sancti Spíritus (Sebiosan) in the agricultural system has made it possible to replace seed imports and extend this experience to other areas of the country.
According to specialists, leaving behind the Unidad Empresarial de Base (UEB) allows for greater independence in administrative procedures and guarantees higher incomes and salaries for workers, with significant income in dividends.
The administrator, Orestes Ramírez, told the press that the seed for planting campaigns in the province and also for national projects is achieved.
As well as maintaining and strengthening the production and marketing of agamic, botanical and biotechnological seeds, he said.
He highlighted as a guarantee for the entity the signing of contracts with various productive forms for the sale of inputs and purchase of raw material that we turn into seed and is protected in cold for marketing in the following campaigns.
The course of the new form of Spirito management is to maintain the mission of producing and marketing seeds with genetic category, to grow and contribute more to the country’s food sovereignty projects.
One of the positive experiences is the high production of transgenic hybrid maize for animal feed in the Yaguajay area, a project prioritised by the Ministry of Agriculture.
As a result of the use of high quality seeds developed by the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB), as well as the contribution of cooperative members, the crop yield was around six tonnes per hectare.
