Press Day kicks off in Cuba

The Press Day in Cuba begins today and will last until the 20th of this month, with various activities focused on the debate on the main problems of communication.

The president of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC), Ricardo Ronquillo, commented exclusively to Prensa Latina that this day will take place in a very peculiar situation both from the communication field and the complex situation the country is going through, a constant target of the hybrid war.

He also considered that the celebration comes at a time when the Revolution is in a communicational counteroffensive, because almost all those who defend the search for a new horizon for the problems of humanity, see Cuba as a reference.

He also stressed that it will be held after the celebration of the XI congress of the union organization, whose main focus was the transformation of the Cuban public communication and public press system in the new current context and in the search for a new socialist model.

In this sense, he recalled that the organization arrives to this day after essential events that show that the Revolution is overcoming the media aggression.

He referred to the New Operation Truth Forum, organized by the Latin American News Agency Prensa Latina during the month of January, which gathered in Havana specialists and media executives from different parts of the world.

This was followed by the International Meeting of Theoretical Publications of Leftist Parties and Movements with the presence of important professionals and directors of leftist and Marxist media from a large part of the world.

He advanced that from March 18 to 20 the country will host the III International Colloquium Patria, which will be attended by more than a hundred experts in the field of communication to discuss various topics.

He said that among the issues to be analyzed will be the development of artificial intelligence and the possibilities it offers to left-wing movements, as well as the search for a new world information order.

It will also be a space to debate about the transformation of the Cuban public communication model, which needs to be adapted to current times, taking advantage of the potential of new technologies.

From UPEC we consider the Colloquium as central in the search for new paths for communication and the triumph of progressive and emancipating ideas in today’s world,» said Ronquillo.

He also stressed that almost all those who meet in Cuba to discuss these issues stress the need for the left media to create a common front to confront the offensive of the neo-colonizing and fascist right wing.

We have the debt of creating the great chain of communicational freedom of the 21st century. That is the great challenge ahead of us», stressed the journalist.

Among the other activities to be carried out during the day, he mentioned the Public Press Festival, press of the people to emphasize the popular character of communication.

Tribute will also be paid to the 133rd anniversary of the founding of the newspaper Patria; as well as the 95th anniversary of the birth of Ernesto Vera and the 170th anniversary of Juan Gualberto Gómez, two referents of revolutionary journalism in the Caribbean nation.

In addition, the Félix Elmusa distinction will be awarded in the coming days to outstanding professionals of the press, as well as the Juan Gualberto Gómez award for the work of the year and the José Martí National Award for life’s work.
