The Fayad Jamís bookstore, in Havana’s Historic Center, is getting ready to present next Monday the book Las ataxias en Cuba. Biografía de un proyecto, by Luis Velázquez, on the occasion of Cuban Science Day.
At the meeting, scheduled for 3:00 p.m. local time, the Doctor of Medical Sciences and author of the volume published by the Scientific-Technical Publishing House will talk with journalist and critic Fernando Rodriguez about the proposal, according to a press release from the Cuban Book Institute.
In eight chapters, the author reflects on the experience of the Center for Research and Rehabilitation of Hereditary Ataxias (Cirah), an institution he founded and directed for almost two decades.
The literary work proposes, among other topics, studies on hereditary ataxias in Cuba and its historical antecedents in the world, as well as the experiences lived with patients and relatives, and the advice given to both for the diagnosis and control of the ailment.
Originally from the Cuban province of Holguin, Luis Velazquez is a specialist in Clinical Neurophysiology and 2nd degree in Neurology, and currently serves as president of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba.
He has received, among other awards, the Carlos J. Finlay Order of Cuba and the Georg Foster Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
The literary event is co-sponsored by the Culture and Social Sciences Sections of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country.
