Pitahaya seedlings ready for planting in Ciego de Avila’s fields

Although there are still no plans to commercialize it or extend its consumption to the population, Ciego de Avila is working to develop the cultivation of a very unique fruit called Pitahaya.

According to Romelio Rodriguez Sanchez, agronomist engineer and Doctor in Agricultural Sciences, in the nursery of the Ceballos Agroindustrial Company, the seedlings of this plant are ready to be planted in the field.

The Pithaya is a kind of cactus with sweet fruits, colorful and colorful shape, with many small seeds and rich in Omega 3.

According to agricultural literature, the also called Dragon Fruit,
is a source of natural antioxidants, contains vitamin C and vitamin B2,
vital for the production of red blood cells, it also contains a substance called tyramine which
also contains a substance called tyramine, which activates a hormone that stimulates the
body to use sugar and fat reserves to transform them into energy.

Dr. Rodriguez Sanchez is the pioneer in the introduction of this fruit in the province of Ciego de Avila, where a first experimental and very small harvest was harvested last July in the fertile lands of the Unión Empresarial de Base Frutales Sur.

For the consumption of the population, Pithaya would be a good option within the range of the already known tropical fruits, hence its propagation should be attended with rigor and the necessary resources for its expansion on a commercial scale.
