Official Mourning in Cuba on the death of Pope Francis

Cuba will remain in Official Mourning from today at 6:00 local time until 24:00 on 24 April, due to the death of His Holiness Pope Francis.

The decision was decreed the day before by President Miguel Díaz-Canel following the news of the death that day of the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, at the age of 88.

According to the statement broadcast on national television, Pope Francis was very active in the search for solutions to global problems affecting humanity and the environment, and a fervent advocate of peace.

He agreed with Cuba on many issues on the international agenda during his long and distinguished career as head of state and spiritual leader, said the text, which highlighted his contributions to the strengthening of respectful ties between this Antillean nation and the Holy See.

It highlighted that, moved by deep feelings of affection for the Cuban people, he interceded for the improvement of relations between the United States and Cuba, advocating that the US government abandon its blockade policy against the Antillean nation.

The communiqué also recalled the ties of friendship that the Supreme Pontiff maintained with Army General Raúl Castro and the reception of President Miguel Díaz-Canel at the Holy See in June 2023.

In a letter on Monday, Army General Raúl Castro said he was deeply moved by the death of the man he considered a close friend, and a man of integrity and consistency.

In his message, the leader of the Cuban Revolution highlighted Pope Francis’ tireless struggle in defence of peace and fraternity among peoples, and his affection for the people of this Caribbean island.

He also highlighted his personal contribution to fostering fraternal dialogue and understanding in relations between Cuba and the Holy See, which, he said, were strengthened during his pontificate.

While the official mourning period is in force, the national flag will be flown at half-mast in public buildings and military institutions.
