The Genetic Livestock Enterprise of Turiguanó in Morón municipality, Ciego de Ávila province, has activated contingency measures to counter the severe drought affecting the region. The operation focuses on preserving Cuba’s largest Santa Gertrudis cattle herd through innovative feeding and watering solutions.
Key interventions include direct distribution of hay and protein-rich plants to livestock units, along with rotational grazing systems that prioritise areas with better grass reserves. The enterprise has also organised sugarcane transportation from local Morón producers as supplemental cattle feed.
Nathanael González Chinea, deputy director of the Turiguanó Genetic Livestock Enterprise, confirmed plans to introduce a nutrient-rich feed supplement produced by the Sugar Enterprise in the coming days. The drought response program simultaneously ensures water access through multiple systems – solar-powered submersible pumps, windmills, and water tanker deliveries – maintaining adequate hydration for the cattle population.
