Facing intense drought conditions while striving to maintain production, the cooperative beekeepers of UBPC Mártires de Barbados in Morón have preserved all their apiaries across Ciego de Ávila’s northern cays.
The apiculture unit’s workers are capitalizing on the cay area’s seasonal advantages, with current blooms of honey-producing plants including sage, wild coffee, black mangrove, almacigo, and pataban.
UBPC Mártires de Barbados management confirmed that between late August and early September, they’ll begin relocating hives to mainland forested areas. The apiaries will be positioned in zones like Cunagua Hill, Ranchuelo, La Caoba, and Naranjo to benefit from flowering vines like leñatero and purple/white morning glories.
The Morón beekeeping unit’s principal outputs include honey, beeswax, and propolis.
