A giant poster with the image of Mijaín López is displayed on one of the walls of the nine-storey building located in the Pedro Martínez Brito popular council, in Ciego de Ávila, as a token of the gratitude and respect of the people of Ciego de Avila for the Giant of Herradura.
The outstanding athlete broke the record of becoming Olympic champion in an individual discipline on five consecutive occasions, something that no one has achieved in the games at that level, as well as being the first wrestler in history to compete in six Olympics.
Lopez, widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, will now continue to show the human and sporting greatness that distinguishes him.
Luis Alberto Pérez Olivares, director of Communal Services in this province, the entity that assumes the investment, said that this recognition is added to others received by the athlete as a sign of the affection of a people, earned with effort and the humility of the champions.
He explained that in addition to the giant statue dedicated to Mijaín López in the nine-storey building, the park next to the Caracol chain shop is being repaired to convert it into a complex that will benefit the residents of the area.
