Mexico Sends Over 800 Tonnes of Humanitarian Aid to Cuba

The Government of Mexico informed this Sunday that it has sent over 814 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Cuba, within a context marked by the intensification of the economic blockade imposed by the United States on the Caribbean nation.

Through a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs specified that, in compliance with the instruction of President Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican Navy’s logistical support vessels, Papaloapan and Isla Holbox, set sail this Sunday from the port of Veracruz.

The provisions from the Central Naval Region were concentrated at the dock of the National Port System Administration Veracruz, from where the loading was carried out.

According to the information released, the Papaloapan is transporting basic foodstuffs, including liquid milk, meat products, biscuits, beans, rice, tuna in water, sardines, and vegetable oil, as well as personal hygiene items, with a load of approximately 536 tonnes of these goods.

For its part, just over 277 tonnes of powdered milk for the same purpose were loaded onto the Isla Holbox.

The first vessel departed at 08:00 local time, and the second at midday, detailed the Foreign Ministry, adding that they are expected to arrive at their destination in four days and noting that there remain over 1,500 tonnes of powdered milk and beans pending shipment.

The statement emphasised that, with these actions, the Government reaffirms the humanist principles and the spirit of solidarity that guide it, and its commitment to international cooperation between peoples, especially with those who, in situations of emergency and vulnerability, require humanitarian aid.

«Cuba and Mexico are brotherly peoples, heirs to a long history of solidarity that we honour today,» it stressed.

Referring to the fact that the people of Mexico keep alive their tradition of solidarity with those of Latin America and in particular with Cuba, the Foreign Ministry also recalled the sending of aid in recent months to other countries that have required it.

In this regard, it mentioned support in the face of wildfires in California, United States, and in Chile, floods in Texas, and the tragedies caused by natural disasters in various nations of the continent.

Last Friday, Sheinbaum stated that Mexico would send humanitarian aid to Cuba by tomorrow at the latest, while diplomatic efforts continued to supply oil, following Washington’s threat to impose tariffs on countries that send crude to the largest of the Antilles.

Various voices in Mexico, from parliamentarians to social organisations and political parties such as the ruling Morena or the Labour Party, have spoken out in support of the Antillean nation against the energy siege by the United States, described as unjust, cruel, and anachronistic.
